Clicking 'Variorum edition' on the menu bar at the top of the screen takes you to the start screen of the OCVE application. You will see a screen similar to the following one (NB the screenshots here and throughout the User guide were taken in Firefox (version 3) running in Microsoft Windows 7; your own display may look slightly different).

The numbered notes below refer to the numbers superimposed on the screenshot.

  • Navigation: these links remain consistent throughout the website and allow you to see supporting information about the project and the website; they also give you access at any time to the full User guide.
  • If you have previously created an account on the OCVE website, the Login link allows you to enter your username and password.
  • The Register link allows you to create an account for yourself. Although you don't need to register to use the website, doing so allows you to create and store annotations.
  • By default, the browse panel on the left is set to show a navigable listing of all of the works of Chopin available within the OCVE resource, grouped by genre, and displayed in a hierarchical or 'tree' format. The tree is expandable; so, clicking a 'plus' icon (+) will expand an entry in the list, allowing you to see the contents, and so on. For more information, see Browsing the Edition.
  • The browse panel can alternatively show a navigable listing of Chopin's works grouped by opus.
  • The notes view function displays bar-level commentary added by the OCVE team and annotations added by end users to a specific bar or range of bars across one or more sources. Note that you must be in bar view for this option to be available.
  • The display panel dominates the display. The contents of this part of the screen vary depending upon selections you make, and the different displays are documented below.

Once you have logged in, the display changes, showing you your name and offering you some additional options:

  • My OCVE offers a quick overview of your activity within the resource, showing you in one place a list of all of the annotations you have created. From this screen you may also edit some of your account details.
  • Logout: if you have finished working on the website, you should logout to end your session.
